MUSE, Volume 2: A Celebration of Women at PublicHouse and beergarden

What does it mean to be called a ‘Muse”?
As a noun, it means a person — especially a woman — who is a source of artistic inspiration. It seems like the perfect word to encompass our 2nd Annual Celebration of Women.

March 8 has been recognized as International Women’s Day since the early 1900’s. International Women's Day celebrates women's achievements in the workplace, and we’ve teamed up with beergarden to amplify and acknowledge the inspirational women in our lives, behind our pubs, creating our beer & spirits, feeding us and performing on our stage.

Live Musical Performances: Prior to 1900 and even after, it was expected that "women would perform music, not make music.” Singing was something of an acceptable pastime for a girl, but playing an instrument….?! Writing songs? Producing records? It wasn’t a thing and, for the most part, women didn’t think of themselves as creators of music. So much has changed. So much will continue to change. Both pubs will be showcasing women-led performances and events throughout the five days, including:

  • Wednesday, March 6

    • PublicHouse Live Music with Dianella, 5pm / Maya Vagner, 6:30pm / Rica Wright (backed by Joe Weber, Neriah Hart and Tim Donahue), 8pm

    • PublicHouse BeerHall: Sophia, Rep from Bend Cider, 6-8pm

  • Thursday, March 7

    • beergarden Live Music with Matti Joy, 5pm / Dianella, 6:30pm / Laura Ivancie, 8pm

    • PublicHouse BeerHall: 2 Towns, featuring their Baddie Cider, an all women-led initiative- brewed with Pink Lady Apples

  • Friday, March 8

    • PublicHouse Live Music with Matti Joy, 5pm / Joanne Broh Trio, 6:30pm / Elena Leona Project, 8pm

    • PublicHouse BeerHall: Bre, Head brewer of Planktown, will be on site from 6-8pm

    • PublicHouse WhiskeyLab will feature Hood River Distllers, a women-led company with women distillers

  • Saturday, March 9

    • beergarden Live Music with Maya Vagner, 5pm / Charming Tempest, 6pm / Complicated, 8pm

    • PublicHouse WhiskeyLab will feature Freeland Spirits in the Courtyard from 3-6pm. Freeland Spirits is a Portland All Women-Led & Run Distillery

  • Sunday, March 10

    • PublicHouse Live Music with McKayla Marie, 3pm / Pants with Pockets (the Eugene String Queens), 4:15pm

    • beergarden: Paint N Sip with Sierra, 3-5pm

On our Drafts and In Our Whiskey Lab at PublicHouse: Both of the teams over at PublicHouse and beergarden are led by women managers, along-side a number of talented women behind the bars. We’re stoked to be featuring some woman-brewed & woman-inspired beers on our draft list over the weekend as well as cocktails featuring spirits from woman distillers.

  • From the BeerHall at PublicHouse:

    • Planktown Pink Boots IPA- Head Brewer, Breann Goulette (since 2016)

    • 2 Towns Baddie Cider- an All Women-Led initiative made with Pink Lady Apples (donation to Pink Boots Society)

From our PublicHouse Food Purveyors: Our kitchens are very much inspired by women and, in some of the kitchens, LED by women. Here are some of the special dishes they’ll be featuring:

  • from Chef Felicia Kirsch with Northwest Burgers: Felicia is featuring a special to celebrate her Italian side. Meatball Burger with Ground Pork and Beef, House-Made Marinara Sauce, Thinly-Sliced Capicola, Mozzarella Cheese, Lettuce, Tomato and Onion

PublicHouse celebrates Oregon Beer Award Medalists for Eugene Beer Week 2023

This year for Eugene Beer Week, PublicHouse is celebrating the very best in Oregon craft beer by featuring a draft list full of Oregon Beer Awards Medalists. Over 25 taps will be dedicated to medal winners.

Taken from the Oregon Beer Awards website, First held in 2015, the Oregon Beer Awards have been honed over time to get where it is now, with rigorous standards, unique styles, and a wide audience. Since its inception the awards have existed with the same goal: to celebrate the art of Oregon Brewing and inspire innovation and growth in the industry. Unlike other beer competitions, the Oregon Beer Awards Style Guidelines are designed to keep categories competitive, and medal in styles that are meaningful to a consumer. Carefully curated by a committee of top brewers and beer influencers in the state, styles have evolved every year to reflect industry changes and strive to be as inclusive as possible. (Read more at Oregon Beer Awards website)

Oregon Beer Awards Co-Founder and author of The New School, Ezra Johnson-Greenhough, writes, “The academy awards of Oregon beer were announced at the Oregon Beer Awards ceremony at Revolution Hall in Portland, Oregon on April 6th, 2023. In 30 categories, 1,113 beers were entered by 126 brewing companies and 56 of them took home medals. In addition to the double-blind judged beer competition presided over by 88 judges over the course of 6 days of judging, there were another 8 awards in non-beer judged categories that were voted on by the OBA academy of over 300 industry peers.” (find out more at The New School)

Our beer buyer at PublicHouse, Dustin Heilig, is striving to put together a draft list that is 100% 2023 and 2022 Oregon Beer Awards Medalists. Here are just a few you can expect to try:
